This Curvi Yogi is DETERMINED!

Meet Lorraine, a yogi who has overcome many obstacles, allowing them to strengthen her practice!

1. What is the affirmation that resonates with you right now in your life? Why did you pick this affirmation?

I am Determined.

The reason why this affirmation resonates with me is because over the last 5-6 years I have had to deal with a lot of struggles; physically, emotionally, mentally, financially and spiritually and through them all, I can say that I am still here determined to live my best life possible.

2. How did you start your yoga practice?

I started practicing yoga at my local gym in Toronto back in 2014.  I went to a few classes and although I found them challenging, I really liked them.  Then I moved to Jamaica in 2015 to run a fitness centre with my husband.  When I saw the open air studio, I literally said to myself that this is the perfect place to begin my practice.  I started going to various yoga classes throughout the island and eventually asked one of the teachers if she would start teaching at our location, which she agreed to.  I attended her classes, but wanted more so I began practicing on my own 4-5 days a week (some weeks were even 6-7 days).

3. As a Curvy Yogi, what obstacles have you had to overcome in your practice?

As a curvy yogi I find that my boobs sometimes get in the way of some poses like plow or shoulder stand.   I also find that when I am weighing less that some poses are much easier to get into such as wheel pose.

4. What is your favorite yoga pose? Why?

My favourite pose is headstand because it makes me feel balanced and strong.

5. What is your least favorite yoga pose? Why?

My least favourite pose is child’s pose.  I am sorry, but this is not a relaxing pose for me.  I have knee issues and child’s pose tends to aggravate it as does Hero’s pose which I like even less and rarely practice.

6. Do you use props in your practice? If so, what is your favorite prop to use? Why?

I love using props to help me get into poses that I find difficult to get into.  My most favourite prop is the yoga wheel.  This props helps me to do chin stands and arm balances that I can’t do on my own as yet.  The wall is also a great prop.

7. What advice would you give to other Curvy Yogis who are trying to build their practice?

My advice to other curvy Yogis is to listen to your body and do what feels comfortable.

Don’t let your size tell you that you can’t practice yoga because yoga is for every BODY.

Also, get yourself the cutest and most comfortable yoga attire that fits in your budget.  Just because you’re curvy doesn’t mean you have to hide.  Rock your curves in clothes that make you look and feel good while practicing yoga.

Thank you Lorraine for sharing your practice with us!
